Into the Light, Album Companion Book Coming August 20th

When I was placed in foster care at nine years old, my father, on one of his rare visits, gave me my very first journal. It was light blue, hardcover, and sealed with a small lock and key. Printed on the cover was a poem by an anonymous author, called What is a Dream?

One of the lines in the poem stuck out to me: Your own secret corner where no one can go, where the path to fulfillment can start.

Having grown up in a household where my privacy and person were violated at every turn, that journal, with its lock and key, became my own secret corner where I could write about what I was going through. I realized much later that my father had given me more than just a blank book that day.

He had handed me a legacy.

I come from a family of writers: authors, journalists, historians, editors, and publishers. Although our home was filled with violence, it was also filled with hundreds of books that lined the walls of nearly every room. From leather-bound classics to science fiction, children’s books, and more, I learned to read at age three and was consuming the Encyclopedia Britannica by seven.

Writing in that journal was the first time I could “hear myself think.” Since then, I’ve filled over one hundred blank books with personal reflections, stories, poems, song lyrics, and more.

I write because it is in my blood. It is in my soul. Along with music, it is the foremost therapeutic tool that helped me survive and overcome some of the most unimaginable violence a child can experience. My debut book, Into the Light: Ten Songs & Stories Transforming Trauma to Triumph, reflects this by telling the story of how music and the written word put me on the path to fulfillment.
